Abstract:
The definition of knowledge as a ‘mode of existence’ (nahw al- wujud) points to another direction in Sadra’s epistemology. By casting knowledge in terms of existence and its modalities, Sadra tries to achieve several goals. The first is to draw out the implications of a metaphysics based on the centrality of existence. This makes all philosophical thinking an exercise in ontology. The second goal is twofold, and it is to overcome the subjectivist tendencies of the Mutakallimun on the one hand, and the representational theory of knowledge of Ibn Sina, on the other.
